Holy Tuesday

The most ancient procession of Misteri (The Mysteries) celebrated in Cagliari is held on Holy Tuesday by the Congregation of Artieri (Artists).

It starts at 03.30 p.m. from the Jesuit's Church of San Michele, in the district of Stampace, featuring seven wooden statues very similar to the ones belonging to SS. Crocifisso, as they were probably sculpted by the same artist, Guiseppe Antonio Lonis, in the late 18th century. The procession involves also some members of the Confraternities of Gonfalone, SS. Crocifisso and Solitudine.
Preceded by two drummer boys and by a brother holding the Cross of Mysteries, the procession passes through the four historical districts of Stampace, Castello, Villanova and Marina, stopping into their most important churches. As in the Mysteries of SS. Crocifisso, every church is visited by a statue of Christ (in the order: The prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, The Arrest, The Flagellation, The Crowning with Thorns, The Ascent to the Calvary, The Crucifixion) followed by the Lady of Sorrows.

Watch the documentary  I Misteri, finalist of the 2016 "Fiorenzo Serra" international contest.
