Giovanni Nonnis, the Matrix and the Sign

This event is related to the sections: Exhibitions

A long history of painting and experimentation on display at the Palazzo di Città.

Giovanni Nonnis (1929 -1975) is one of the most gifted artists of the late twentieth century in Sardinia. The exhibition "Giovanni Nonnis, the Matrix and the Sign" celebrates him with about eighty works, which investigate the main themes of his production. The protagonist is the theme of the warrior that emerges dancing and vital from the epic of the Nuraghic to build, together with prehistoric horses and pre-Columbian subjects, an archaeology of the imaginary, where the myth becomes a critical response to the contemporary society.

For the first time, the polystyrene matrices of Nonnis works are on display, engraved and then soaked in colour. The exhibited works come from the private collection of Nonnis' heirs and from the civic collection of the 20th century Sardinian artists. The core of the Nuraghic theme is the ancient "four-eyed and four-armed" bronze statuette (X-VIII centuries BC), found in Teti, on loan from the Archaeological Museum of Cagliari, a master figure of Nonnis' poetics.

Also in the rooms of the Archaeological Museum some works of the artist will be exhibited, emblems of the link between contemporary art and archaeology.
