Passion Friday

The Procession of Misteri (The Mysteries), taking place on Passion Friday, winds through the streets of the oldest districts of Cagliari and stops in 7 churches. Each sacred building on the path is visited by a Mistero, according to the chronological order of the passion, for an homage to the Blessed Sacrament, a meditation and the singing of a hymn. Each simulacrum is accompanied inside the church by the Lady of Sorrows, while the remaining five stop outside, allowing the carriers few minutes of rest.

Misteri are seven wooden statues, sculpted in 1758 by the sardinian sculptor Giuseppe Antonio Lonis. They represent six episodes of the Passion of Christ (The prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, The Arrest, The Flagellation, The Crowning with Thorns, The Ascent to the Calvary, The Crucifixion) and the Lady of Sorrows.

The procession, leaving the Oratory of Santo Cristo at 4.00 p.m., is preceded by s'andadori (the messenger) of the brotherhood, together with one or more drummer boys. Behind them, flanked by two lamppost bearers, is the "cross of the mysteries ", in ancient times a dismal emblem of penitents and flagellants. The simulacra follow the cross on brothers' shoulders, thanks to special floats. Between the Ascent to the Calvary and the Crucifixion covered by a small purple canopy, is the great black wooden cross later used in the ritual of S'Incravamentu (The Crucifixion), carried by a penitent who plays Simon of Cyrene.

Each stop-over is marked by a solemn song performed by the "massa" (choir) related to the Confraternity, divided into five vocal groups.
