Easter Sunday

Among Sardinian Holy Week traditions, the most enduring one, still held in all over the island, is S'Incontru (The Meeting), recalling an apocryphal episode that would have taken place immediately after the resurrection. In Cagliari, the charming ceremony is celebrated by the three parish of Marina, Stampace and Villanova. The latter is usually the one of the greatest popular attraction.

At 11.00 a.m., the statues of Madonna and Resurrected Christ, carried by two different cortèges coming from the church of S. Giacomo and the Oratory of Santo Cristo, meet each others in piazza Garibaldi. In that moment, according to the ancient Spanish court ceremonial, the statue of the Son greets the one of the Mother with three bows, soon returned. Then, the two statues come back to San Giacomo side by side for the celebration of the solemn high mass.
