S'inserru (The Closing)

In Cagliari, the lenten activities of its many confraternities officially end on the first days after the octave of Easter, dedicated to the ceremonies of S'Inserru (The Closing). In those ceremonies, indeed, the statues carried in procession in the preceding rituals and exposed to popular worship until then, are stored again in their own chapels, where are going to add further twelve months to their age.
In ancient times celebrated solemnly, as still nowadays in Spain and in various southern italian regions, S'Inserru is currently held as a public ritual only by the Confraternity of Santo Cristo (Holy Christ).
On the Dominica in Albis (the first sunday after Easter), at 10.30 a.m., brothers and sisters in civilian clothes, meet each other in the parish of San Giacomo. The statues of the Risen Christ and the Glorious Virgin parade in a short procession along the streets of the of Villanova, and come back to the Oratory of Santo Cristo. The day after, in a semi-public rite, both are stored in their own niches. Similarly, in the late afternoon of the first Monday after the octave of Easter, the Crucifix and the Lady of Sorrows belonging to the Confraternity of Nostra Signora della Solitudine (Our Lady of Solitude) are placed again in their chapels, in the church of San Giovanni.
