HOLY WEEK 2017

from April 03, 2017 to April 24, 2017

Easter Sunday

Among Sardinian Holy Week traditions, the most enduring one, still held in all over the island, is S'Incontru (The Meeting), recalling an apocryphal episode that would have taken place immediately after the resurrection. In Cagliari, the charming ceremony is celebrated by the three parish of Marina, Stampace and Villanova. The latter is usually the one of the greatest popular attraction.

At 10.30 a.m., the statues of Madonna and Resurrected Christ, carried by two different cortèges coming from the church of S. Giacomo and the Oratory of Santo Cristo, meet each others in the middle of via Garibaldi. In that moment, according to the ancient Spanish court ceremonial, the statue of the Son greets the one of the Mother with three bows, soon returned. Then, the two statues come back to San Giacomo side by side for the celebration of the solemn high mass.

About half an hour before, on the opposite side of the hill of Castello, the same rite has been celebrated by the parish of Sant'Anna, in Stampace. At 10 o'clock the Virgin, veiled in black, leaves Sant'Anna carried by the Congregation of Artieri (Artists), while a similar cortège, held by the Confraternity of Gonfalone (Flag) and parading the Risen Christ, leaves the church of Sant'Efisio. The meeting takes place in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, in correspondence of the ancient church of San Francesco, once cornerstone of the Holy Week rites of Stampace and nowadays no more existing. That is where the Madonna substitutes the black veil with a silver imperial crown, as a sign of joy. After the usual bows, the statues are led to the Parish Church of St. Anne side by side.

Easter morning ends with the celebration of S'Incontru by the parish of Sant'Eulalia, in the district of Marina. The Risen Christ is carried in procession by some volunteers wearing a black sackcloth that recalls the habit of the ancient Confraternity of Orazione e Morte (Prayer and Death), once seated in the church of Santo Sepolcro; the Glorious Virgin, instead, by some others wearing a white sackcloth and a red cape, as the brothers of the Confraternity of Sangue di Cristo (Christ's Blood), in the past centuries seated in the church of Santa Lucia. The two statues meet each others in Via Roma, outside the church of San Francesco da Paola. After the ceremony, the two cortèges come back to Sant'Eulalia together, for attending the solemn mass of midday.
